Taiwan is known to be powered by small and medium enterprises, which make up 98 percent of the total number of businesses, unlike the Korean economy, which conglomerates dominate.

In an era when businesses perform on a global scale, trade barriers continue to disappear and regional trade pacts increase, Taiwan has drawn up a plan to help SMEs go abroad.

This is one item the government is taking to the 2015 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Manila next month.

This is in line with this year's theme of "inclusive economies," which refers to balanced growth that benefits all.

"We want to assist SMEs in expanding their market in foreign countries," Chin-sung Cheng, deputy director of the Multilateral Trade Affairs Division at the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Bureau of Foreign Trade, said.
