STANDARD CHARTERED BANK CAREER (1998-2019)

 

Executive Director & Head of Portfolio Risk Management, Commercial Banking, UAE

January 2016 – July 2019

  • Maintained quality of commercial banking, asset portfolio by taking proactive measures for retaining acceptable credit grade of the portfolio. This was done by early engagement, close monitoring & in-depth negotiations with potential problem names.
  • Minimized the loan impairment by proactively restructuring potential names based on the projected cash flow of such stressed customer, improved the quality of portfolio by negotiating incremental security/collateral coverage. 

  • Recovered from non-performing relationships where recovery prospects have been exhausted. This was done through initiating dialogue, applying skip tracing, agreeing on a repayment plan and eventually follow up for closure and track repayments. Any recovery from these measures would directly go to the revenue line, thereby increasing the profitability of the businesses. 


 

Senior Credit Officer, Commercial Banking, UAE

April 2014 – December 2015

  • Lead a team of 7 highly qualified and certified approvers and underwriters.
  • Design a robust risk strategy to meet the challenging and sustainable revenue aspiration of our result-oriented bank. The strategy focused on a detail study of the risk – reward perspective of our aspiration. The strategy also entailed a comprehensive underwriting process given our risk appetite for larger companies that we bank where the limit sizes will be substantially larger compared to our erstwhile SME segment.
  • Ensured adequate controls, effective process and market driven policies to be in place to ensure acceptable loan impairment. The delegated authorities have been significantly increased to guarantee quick turn-around of decisions.
  • This newly created segment helped expand the bank’s foot print to a wider customer base and generate sustainable revenue by addressing the needs and offering solutions to a much larger customer segment. This segment is entitled to provide all kinds of banking solutions to companies having sales turnover of up-to USD 1.5 Bln.

 

Head of Credit, SME, Private Banking & Wealth Management, UAE & Middle East Markets, UAE & Pakistan

October 2008 – March 2014

  • Ran the risk function for SME (Medium Enterprises and Small Business), Private Banking and Wealth Management Business for the bank for UAE & Middle East Markets.
  • Developed a sustainable risk strategy in line with the Risk Appetite and risk-reward framework of the bank in these focused and prime segments of Consumer Banking.
  • Maintained acceptable quality of the portfolios, ensured adequate policies, processes and controls are in place and are robust, supported development of products.
  • Prepared and managed the Loan Impairment budget, which is essentially the prime task for the Head of Credit, executing adequate cost control for credit, and help business managers generating the targeted revenue.
  • Lead a 17-member team which includes Underwriters, Policy and Special Assets Manager.

 

Senior Manager, Group SME Credit, CB, Singapore

August 2007 – September 2008

  • Group Approver for Medium Enterprises (ME) Business in the SME space for the group.
  • According approvals for facilities emanating from the SME businesses.
  • Managed the entire risk aspect for the SME business and advised the value stream risk managers on structuring, documentation, policy compliance and other areas of risk management.
  • Reviewed and approved the Product Development document – the guiding document for conducting business for SME
  • Provided guidance to countries on policy, procedures & risk management; reviewed classified portfolio of the respective countries.

 

Regional SME Risk Manager, Middle East & South Asia, UAE

January 2006 – July 2007

  • Managed the risk for 7 countries within Middle East and South Asia with an asset portfolio of around USD 500 million both in Small businesses and Medium Enterprises businesses. I was also responsible for Medium Enterprises businesses for Africa and Malaysia over and above the country delegation. I was also instrumental in launching the SME business in Jordan, Bahrain and Oman.
  • Reviewed and approved Product Development Documents, credit proposals, review of classified accounts, portfolio management and MIS review, establishment of Early Alert process etc.
  • Assisted in the integration of the Union Bank acquisition in Pakistan by SCB for the SME business.

 

Senior Manager, Corporate Banking, UAE

(Previously Senior Relationship Manager, December 1998 – 2001)

July 2001 – December 2005

  • Managed a corporate portfolio size of approx. AED 840 Million with average outstanding of AED 500 Million. Customer profile included large local corporates as well as expatriate owned businesses dealing in automobiles, tobacco products, foodstuffs, super market chains, building material, ready-made garments and oil refining products and services.
  • Revenues budgeted from the portfolio amounted to AED 12.0 Million in year 2003 and were successfully achieved.
  • Positively contributed in my team’s efforts to enhance revenues from assets, liabilities as well as cash management products. Apart from my above role, I also performed the duty of the acting Unit Head in his absence.

 

Positions held at American Express Bank Limited: June 1984 – September 1997, Bangladesh

Various positions held in corporate banking with the last being Head of Corporate Banking, Chittagong Area, Bangladesh.

During my 14-year tenor with American Express Bank, majority of my time was spent in credit and marketing where my job included primarily the following responsibilities:

  • Handling loan portfolio of USD 75Million.
  • Soliciting and developing new businesses for the bank while expanding and deepening of existing relationships.
  • Processing and obtaining approval of credit presentations.
  • Handling large and important credit relationships that included multinational names like Bangladesh Tobacco (subsidiary of British American Tobacco), Bata, Singer, BASF, Pfizer and SKF. I also handled the accounts of government owned entities including Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (state trading corporation) and host of other local corporate names.
